SL to offer dual citizenships

The government is to amend the Immigration and Emigration Act of Sri Lanka in order to offer dual citizenships, a minister said.

Minister Laxman Yapa Abeywardana told the media today that the Government is to establish a new scheme called ‘overseas Sri Lankans’ to formalize the grant of dual citizenship to Lankans who have terminated citizenship.

Cabinet approves SF’s release

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has obtained the approval of the cabinet of ministers to release jailed Sarath Fonseka, Presidential Spokesman Bandula Jayasekara said.

Police raid brothel in Peliyagoda

Six young women alleged to be prostitutes and their manager were arrested by the Peliyagoda Police during a raid conducted at a boarding house in the Peliyagoda area on Saturday.

It was revealed that the house was used for prostitution purposes for a long time in a secret manner.

It was a mistake-Govt

The government today admitted that the controversial share deal between the National Savings Bank and The Finance Company did not conform with laid down procedure of the Finance Ministry and as such Treasury Secretary P.B. Jayasundara had suspended the transaction.

 Government spokesman and Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene said Dr. Jayasundara was inquiring into the questionable purchase by the NSB of a 13 per cent stake in the TFC at about Rs.50 a share while the market value was nearly Rs.31.The Rs.390 million transaction had taken place on April 27.

Tamara to Cuba, Ravinatha to Geneva

Despite objections by Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the UN Tamara Kunanayakam of herself being transferred from her post, Sri Lanka's ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and the EU Ravinatha Aryasinha has been appointed the new Permanent Representative to the UN, informed sources said.

Ms. Kunanayakam will be sent as Ambassador to Cuba.

Police to appoint 18 DIG’s

The Police Departments is to appoint 18 Deputy Inspector General (DIG) officers within the next two weeks, the Police Headquarters said today.

58 Senior Superintendents of Police (SSP) were interviewed to select suitable officers for the positions. The list of the officers selected to the positions will be sent to the Public Services Commission next week.

10 billion allocated for development projects in the north

The Economic Development Ministry has allocated Rs.10 billion for various development projects to be carried out in the north this year, officials said yesterday.

Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Douglas Devananda and Northern Governor Major General G.A. Chandrasiri, made this announcement at a meeting held at the Jaffna District Secretariat.
