Wimal Weerawansa, Minister of Housing & Construction Industry and the leader of the political party Jathika Nidahas Peramuna, has been appointed President of the Sri Lanka Taekwondo Association, a communiqué from the Association said on Thursday (June 3).
The appointment has been made at the ministry auditorium by the Executive Committee of the Taekwondo Association. The SL Taekwondo Association which was formed in 1979 has never appointed a politician as its head before.
Minister Weerawansa has pledged he would help spread the sport to the far off districts in the island as it is restricted to a few urban schools now.
The District Executives of the Association, Chaminda Punchihewa, Ranjith Muramudali, Secretary Thushan Wijesinghe, Assi. Secretary Bandhula Karunatilake and Treasurer Susantha Jeewa too have taken part in the above meeting.
