The JVP yesterday accused IGP Dr. Mahinda Balasuriya of trying to cover up the killing of Ruhunu undergraduate Susantha Anura Bandara by blaming a rival student faction for the attack on the victim.
Addressing the media at JVP head office yesterday, National List MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that IGP Balasuriya had changed his position on the cause of Anura’s death within 48 hours due to political pressure.
Referring to a hastily called press conference at police headquarters on Friday (July 23) afternoon, Dissanayake said that IGP Balasuriya citing the Badulla Judicial Medical Officer Dr. M. N. Rahuk Haq’s postmortem report said that there was no evidence of violence and the body had no injuries. Continue Reading

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (AP) – Scientists have developed a method for detecting and tracking carbon dioxide deep underground, giving the federal government an important tool as scientists work on ways to keep carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from crowding the atmosphere.
Scientists working with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory used colorless, nontoxic liquids called perfluorocarbon tracers to essentially fingerprint carbon dioxide that was injected into a coal seam in northwestern New Mexico.

The moon was probably formed after a massive space collision with a planet-sized object billions of years ago, in what Nasa described as the "big whack".
Astronomers believe the object, most likely the size of Mars, collided with the earth about 4.6 billion years ago.

LONDON (AP) – Some of the world’s most popular blood pressure pills may slightly increase your risk of getting cancer, but doctors say it’s too soon to ditch the drugs, according to new research.
In an analysis of five previous studies following about 60,000 patients, experts found a link between people taking medicines known as angiotensin-receptor blockers, or ARBs, and cancer. The drugs are taken by millions of people worldwide for conditions like high blood pressure, heart problems and diabetic kidney disease.
