TENNIS: ESTORIL, Portugal, May 5 (AFP) – French second seed Richard Gasquet defeated Daniel Munoz-de la Nava 7-6 (7/1), 6-2 on Friday to reach the semi-finals of the Estoril Open, as he plays his first clay event of the season.
Gasquet, who lost the 2007 final to Novak Djokovic on his last visit to Estoril, beat the lowest-ranked player remaining in the field in number 148 de la Nava. He now faces another Spaniard, Albert Ramos, the fourth seed who saw off local favourite Joao Sousa 6-2, 6-3.

TABLE TENNIS: Sri Lanka Junior National Table Tennis Team is participating in the Thailand Junior & Cadet Open International Table Tennis championship and ITTF World Junior Circuit Table Tennis championship that started yesterday and goes on till 9 May 2012 in Pattaya, Thailand.
The 18-member team dominating outstation schools have to compete in under 12, 15 & 18 age categories.

These sentiments were expressed by wicket-keeper Romesh Kaluvitharana who won the Best Fielder’s prize at the 1987 contest there Josephian Rohan Weerakkody became the Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year.

Half centuries by Amila Aponso 78 not out (7 fours) and Amal Fernando 65 (8 fours) helped St. Sebastian’s College Moratuwa to force a draw in their inter school cricket match against St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy at the University Grounds, Peradeniya yesterday.
The Sebastianites in reply to the Sylvestrian total of 314 for 9 declared folded up for 161 with only Amila Aponso resisting with a defensive 48.

Former Sri Lanka Schools Under-15 skipper and Cambrian opener and stumper Kusal Mendis hit up a magnificent 206 runs against Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa which enabled Prince of Wales to beat them by an innings and 162 runs and register their fourth victory for the season played at Moratuwa.
Kusal’s double hundred consisted of 29 fours and one six and faced 214 balls and occupied the crease for 244 minutes and thus became the fourth Cambrian to notch up a double hundred and others were Lantra Fernando, Wivantha Fernando and Nayana Ranjith. Also he joined the select band of 1,000 brigade Cambrians and so far he has scored 1,015 runs in thirteen matches and the only schoolboy to score a double hundred this season.

This is my seventh visit to Australia and third to Perth and I must say that it’s a stimulating place to be in, having covered Test cricket and one-day tournaments since 1986/87.
At the time of writing, Sri Lanka is set to play two Commonwealth Bank series games against India and Australia. Here in Perth there is a lot of excitement and anticipation among the Lankans residing here.

Wesley College with a superior team effort beat Royal College by 10 wickets after 43 years to regain the Sir Frank Gunasekera Trophy in their 119th school cricket encounter ended at Campbell Park yesterday.Wesley last beat Royal in 1969 under the captaincy of Amaresh Rajaratnam and lost to Royal in the following year (1970) also under Amaresh Rajaratnam.
The two oldest cricket playing schools have played 119 matches where Royal had won 53 and Wesley 21 with 48 ending as draws.The main cause for Royal’s defeat was their paltry 89 runs scored in the first innings.
