Friendship Sports Gala postponed

The Sri Lanka Pakistan Friendship Sports Gala 2012 which was to be held on 19th May 2012, at Stanley Jansz Grounds, Colombo 2 has been postponed.

The fresh dates will be announced subsequently.

Six-a-side cricket tourney

To commemorate the 125th Anniversary of Dharmaraja College, Kandy this year the School has organized an all Island invitation Six-a-side Cricket tournament to be held on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd June, 2012 at the Lake View Grounds, Kandy.

Best teams of the cricket playing schools in the island have been invited and sixteen teams will be selected for the tournament on first come first serve basis.

Cambrians in fourth successive win

Prince of Wales’ College maintained their unbeaten record with fourth successive win when they beat formidable Zahira College, Colombo by 41 to 31 in their inter-school under twenty division one group ‘C’ Singer League Rugby tournament match worked off at Moratuwa.

During the half time Cambrians were leading with 26 to 19.

Bodybuilding C’ship in Dehiwala

The Amateur Bodybuilding championship 2012 organized by Sri Lanka Body Building and Fitness Federation (SLBBFF) will be held on May 19 at 4.00 PM at Jayasinghe Memorial Theatre, Dehiwala.

The event will be graced by Dehiwala- Mount Lavinia Municipal Council Mayor Dhanasiri Amarathunga and Sri Lanka Army Brigadier Mihindu Kulasuriya.About 225 contestents have applied for the event and this is the third project of the SLBBFF.

Royal face fierce challenge from Joes

Defending champions Royal College, Colombo will face a fierce challenge from a rejuvenated Josephian team in their Singer League Segment one ‘A’ Division rugby match at CR and FC Grounds, Longden Place today.

The Royalties remain unbeaten by beating D S Senanayake (45-5), Vidyartha (38-29) and Science College (32-17) but won’t find it easy against the Josephians who went down fighting to St Peter’s (24-36) and Vidyartha (31-41) in their last two outings.

Chanderpaul survives as Windies struggle

Pakistan won’t have it easy in SL -Whatmore

Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore on Wednesday warned his players they faced a battle on next month’s tour of Sri Lanka, saying the hosts were tough opponents in home conditions.

The Australian backed the six uncapped players picked across Pakistan’s Test, one-day and Twenty20 squads to make an impact on the tour, which starts with a Twenty20 international in Hambantota on June 1.

Minister calls for report from SLC

Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage yesterday called for a report to be submitted within one month from Sri Lanka Cricket, regarding the progress of the cricket clubs in the provinces and districts in a bid to include talented outstation cricketers into the national pool.

The minister was addressing the officials of Sri Lanka Cricket and national selecters at the Sports Ministry Auditorium yesterday.

Cream of Asian athletes to show colours here

Sri Lanka will host one of Asia’s major sports championships, the 15th Asian Junior Athletic Championship from June 9 to 12 at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo.

It will showcase talents of over 900 Asian athletes from 36 countries in 44 track and field events. This was revealed during a discussion with the participation of Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage and Acting Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena at the Media Ministry auditorium yesterday.

Harsha Abeykoon, Acting SLC Media Manager

Harsha B. Abeykoon, the Sports Ministry’s Media Secretary has been appointed as the Acting Media Manager (Honorary) of the Sri Lanka Cricket with effect from May 15, 2012. Abeykoon who has over 20 experiences in the media field as a government media officer has served in several Ministries as a Media Coordinator/Media Secretary.

Abeykoon who graduated from the University of Peradeniya, has obtained the post graduate diploma in Writership and Mass Communication and Masters degree in Mass Communication from the Sri Jayawardhenapura University and has an Honours Diploma in Mass Communication in Colombo University.
