Emil Zatopeck an outstanding long distance runner

Emil Zatopeck of Checkoslavakia, was one of the most outstanding long distance runners in the world. He took part in the 1952 Olympic Games, held at Helsinki – capital of Finland.

He was born in Checozlovakia in 1922. His parents were villagers. At a very young age, Zatopeck, started working in shoe factory. Hard-working Zatopeck’s ambition was to save money to further his higher studies. This disciplined determined youth, pursued his studies in foreign languages and in chemistry. He obtained his diploma in these subjects and later joined the Army.

England edge ahead as wickets tumble in Third Test

England edged to a slender five-run lead over Pakistan at the close as 16 wickets fell during an extraordinary opening day of the third and final test at Dubai Stadium Friday.

Routed for a low score of 99 in their first innings by England pacemen Stuart Broad (4-36) and James Anderson (3-35), Pakistan spinners moved to the fore to leave England struggling at 104-6.

Even exchanges at Reid Avenue

Exchanges were even at the end of the first day’s play in the inter school under 19 cricket match between Royal College and St.Peter’s College which began at Reid Avenue yesterday. Royal taking first lease of the wicket made a respectable 252 all out in 51.5 overs. Left hander Imal Liyanage top scored for Royal with a fine knock of 55 runs inclusive of eleven boundaries and two sixes while Hashen Ramanayake made 51 with six hits to the ropes and one over it. Later in the innings Chamika Karunaratne hit out lustily to score 50 not out with five boundaries and one six. Spinners Ramitha Liyanaarachchi (three for 63) and Julian de Zilwa (five for 57) restricted the Royalists.

St Peter’s in reply, helped by a sparkling knock of 119 runs by skipper Shehan Fernando scored 224 for eight by the close , Fernando had 14 boundaries and five sixes in his knock.

No cricket for Lankans

The Sri Lanka cricketers under newly reappointed captain Mahela Jayawardena who are determined to forget their recent losses and impress in the Commonwealth Bank series here were disappointed when their game against the Prime Minister’s X1 in Canberra was called off due to rain yesterday.

Speaking to the media in Canberra, captain Jayawardena made it known that they are out to do well and get the recent losses out of their system. He said that if the recent losses are analysed it shows that they lost 2-1, 3-2 or 4-2. He is determined to improve on that and get into winning ways. However Jayawardena was not going to play against the Prime Minister’s X1, according to Sri Lankan manager and media spokesman Charith Senanayake.

Sri Lanka ‘A’ in six wicket win

Sri Lanka ‘A’ squared the five match ODI series 2-2 defeating England Lions by six wickets in the fourth limited overs match played at the R Premadasa Stadium, Khettarama yesterday.

The unofficial ODI series between the two sides has left the fifth and final match interestingly poised when they meet on Monday at the same venue.

Cricketing cowboys enter the rodeo with lassos

The cricketing cowboys from Australia, Sri Lanka and India will don coloured clothing and enter the floodlit rodeo, attempting to lasso their opponents and hopefully carry away the Commonwealth Bank Trophy when the tri series is called ‘PLAY’ tomorrow in Melbourne, Australia.

Not only the cricketers, the umpires too will don colored clothing, with white balls being used and the sight screens going into mourning, as it were, dressed up in black as if to indicate this is not cricket.
