The three suspects who are alleged to have brought in 345 grams of hashish were further remanded till May 16, by Colombo Fort Magistrate Kaniska Wijeratne on Wednesday.
The three suspects, were taken into custody by the Police Narcotics Bureau in connection with importing and possessing of hashish.

Five suspects involved in a robbery of jewellery and other goods worth Rs 3 million from a pawn shop at Sirimapura, Rajangane on April 26 have been arrested by the Tambuttegama Police along with the loot.
Police who went into action soon after a complaint was made by the shop owner on April 27 arrested two suspects at Rajangane Tract One and Paluwewa. The third suspect, a driver of a lorry used in the robbery was arrested near the Kalaoya temple.

Thefts of artifacts and pillaging of Sri Lanka’s historical and cultural sites have recorded a steep rise, prompting the Archaeology Department to take additional security measures to protect the country’s archaeological treasures, Archaeology Department Director General Dr Senarath Dissanayake said. He told the Daily News 93 artifact thefts and treasure hunts were reported during the first four months of this year .
The National Heritage Ministry in coordination with the Archaeology Department has planned a series of programmes with special emphasis on the protection of archaeological monuments and artifacts in the wake of recent treasure hunts and artifacts robberies which are on the rise in the country, Dr Dissanayake said.

Human Resources Senior Minister and chairman of COPE D E W Gunasekara yesterday stated that he stressed to the Secretaries of ministries or Chief Accounting Officers of government institutions, the need to take legal action or direct matters to the CID or Bribery Commission, wherever necessary, in relation to accountability issues in state institutions.

Police arrested two persons who had heroin in their possession on Vesak Full Moon Poya day. Police Spokesman SP Ajith Rohana said the suspects were arrested with eight grams of heroin. One was arrested in Kottawa while the other was in Badulla.
One suspect was arrested on High Level road opposite the Pannipitiya Dharmapala Vidyalaya with 3.9 grams of heroin. Kottawa Police arrested him when heroin was found in his possession after checking his three wheeler. The suspect was remanded by the Homagama Magistrate until May 15. The other suspect, 19, a resident of Badulla was arrested opposite the Badulla Railway Station with 3.94 grams of heroin.

A man died after he was stabbed with a broken bottle during a brawl in Mount Lavinia on Sunday evening.
Police said the victim identified as Dharshana Keerthi Kumara, 40, from Kekunadura, Matara was employed in Mount Lavinia.

The Army announced that over 2,500 soldiers who deserted during the war period were arrested during the first three months of this year. Around 36,500 soldiers who deserted were arrested during 2009, 2010 and 2011), Army Media Spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya said.
Around 65,000 soldiers deserted the Army over the last two decades and 36,500 among them have already been arrested, he said.

A young man who had in his possession a stock of pornographic videos featuring schoolgirls, with some in their school uniforms, was taken into custody by Ingiriya police on Friday evening. Police carried out the raid on a tip-off that the suspect was secretly selling and lending CDs at his shop in Ingiriya town.
Police also seized 101 pornographic CDs, six pen drives and two computers with pornographic videos. Police also arrested another suspect who frequents the shop to purchase the CDs.

It was on April 24 morning that Wellampitiya police station received a phone call from a woman that her aunt had not answered the telephone that morning and when she later visited her home at Wellampitiya she found the house locked up.
She complained that something might have happened to her aunt and wanted the police to visit the house as she suspected foul play.
