Human Resources Senior Minister and chairman of COPE D E W Gunasekara yesterday stated that he stressed to the Secretaries of ministries or Chief Accounting Officers of government institutions, the need to take legal action or direct matters to the CID or Bribery Commission, wherever necessary, in relation to accountability issues in state institutions.
He made this observation winding up the Adjournment Motion on the COPE report, moved by A H M Azwer, MP. Senior Minister Gunasekara: “Mr Speaker, At the outset, I wish to thank the Hon members of both sides of the House for their contribution which was critical but constructive.

Police arrested two persons who had heroin in their possession on Vesak Full Moon Poya day. Police Spokesman SP Ajith Rohana said the suspects were arrested with eight grams of heroin. One was arrested in Kottawa while the other was in Badulla.
One suspect was arrested on High Level road opposite the Pannipitiya Dharmapala Vidyalaya with 3.9 grams of heroin. Kottawa Police arrested him when heroin was found in his possession after checking his three wheeler. The suspect was remanded by the Homagama Magistrate until May 15. The other suspect, 19, a resident of Badulla was arrested opposite the Badulla Railway Station with 3.94 grams of heroin.

Police said the victim identified as Dharshana Keerthi Kumara, 40, from Kekunadura, Matara was employed in Mount Lavinia.

The Army announced that over 2,500 soldiers who deserted during the war period were arrested during the first three months of this year. Around 36,500 soldiers who deserted were arrested during 2009, 2010 and 2011), Army Media Spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya said.
Around 65,000 soldiers deserted the Army over the last two decades and 36,500 among them have already been arrested, he said.

A young man who had in his possession a stock of pornographic videos featuring schoolgirls, with some in their school uniforms, was taken into custody by Ingiriya police on Friday evening. Police carried out the raid on a tip-off that the suspect was secretly selling and lending CDs at his shop in Ingiriya town.
Police also seized 101 pornographic CDs, six pen drives and two computers with pornographic videos. Police also arrested another suspect who frequents the shop to purchase the CDs.

Wadduwa Police arrested 11 employees of a company in Colombo who had stolen a multi-media screen valued around Rs 150,000 from a hotel in Wadduwa. Police recovered the stolen property from the possession of a suspect. Investigations revealed that 11 employees from a company in Colombo had come to the hotel to decorate the main hall for a wedding.
They are alleged to have stolen the multi-media screen after completing the work.

Sri Lanka has proved that all material and video clips against Sri Lanka are false, although the pro-LTTE international media such as Channel Four and diaspora had unleashed adverse publicity against the three Forces and the government, Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) Director General Lakshman Hulugalle said.
“The Tamil community in the North and East have gone through a harrowing ordeal during the past three decades due to war and terrorism. These people had no freedom to even speak against the bitter experiences they had to face,” he added. Hulugalle was addressing the RUTHLESS- LTTE’s Final Crimes Against Humanity DVD launching ceremony at the MCNS yesterday. This DVD produced by the Defence Ministry, includes facts and evidence supplied by the Tamil people relating to the war along with the identity of the real perpetrators of atrocities against them. “All arrangements are in place to release these DVDs and video clips to the international media to make it aware of the correct details of the war period in Sri Lanka,” he said.
