Grenade flung at magistrate’s residence

A hand grenade was thrown at the Marawila magistrate’s residence yesterday by an unidentified person but it did not explode, Police Spokesman SP Ajith Rohana said.

The suspect had come on a motorcycle and had thrown the bomb and fled. No casualties were reported. Three police teams are investigating the incident.

Eighteen hospitalised due to gas leak

Eighteen persons were admitted to the Dankotuwa Hospital after becoming unconscious due to a gas leakage at a soap manufacturing factory in Dankotuwa, said Police Media Spokesman Ajith Rohana.

The incident took place at around 12.15 pm yesterday. According to Dankotuwa Hospital sources, five persons were transferred to the Negombo and Colombo National Hospitals. Dankotuwa police investigating.

LTTE atrocities: massacre of 146 Buddhist pilgrims

Yesterday marked the 27th remembrance of the brutal massacre of 146 Buddhist pilgrims by LTTE terrorists at the Sacred Jaya Sri Maha-Bodhi at Anuradhapura. On May 14 , 1985 – a Sunday, the entire nation and the Buddhist world were shocked at the news of barbarism displayed by the most ruthless terrorist group – the LTTE, on unarmed innocent civilians including the clergy, women and children.

As revealed later, the attack was masterminded by the megalomaniac terror leader Prabhakaran himself, intended at flaming communal hatred and provoking a spree of violence targeting innocent Tamil civilians.

Police seize huge explosives cache in North

The Police have found a haul of C4 and other explosives from the general area Pudukudirippu and Iranamadu hidden near an old LTTE bunker. The cache was found during a search operation by the Vavuniya Police following information received.

This is the largest haul of C4 explosives ever found and these goods are believed to have been hidden by the LTTE during the war period.

History of Triforces’ heroic war

‘Gota’s War’, a book which unveils the events related to the conflict in Sri Lanka and highlights the crushing of Tiger terrorism in Sri Lanka, was launched yesterday at Water’s Edge, Battaramulla amid a massive gathering with President Mahinda Rajapaksa participating as Chief Guest.

The author of the book senior journalist C A Chandraprema presented copies of the book to President Mahinda Rajapaksa and to Secretary, Defence and Urban Development Ministry Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. International Monetory Cooperation Minister Sarath Amunugama and Secretary to the President Lalith Weerathunga made analytical lectures on the book.

Strengthening maritime security vital – Indian don

Attention must be focused on strengthening Sri Lanka’s maritime security since it plays a vital role in the country’s safety and protection, Pondicherry University Associate Professor A Subramanyam Raju said. “Strengthening maritime security is a must since new threats are emerging from the sea. Such threats are more difficult to tackle than those emanating from land,” he said. Professor Raju said the ocean is rich with many resources.

He was in Sri Lanka on a visit organized by the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies, Colombo.

Thieves nabbed with loot

Two men who had robbed motorcycles, gold chains and mobile phones from several areas were arrested by Horana Police yesterday.

Police also seized two stolen motorcycles, melted gold and four mobile phones.

Suspects in hashish case further remanded

The three suspects who are alleged to have brought in 345 grams of hashish were further remanded till May 16, by Colombo Fort Magistrate Kaniska Wijeratne on Wednesday.

The three suspects, were taken into custody by the Police Narcotics Bureau in connection with importing and possessing of hashish.

Robbers netted with loot

Five suspects involved in a robbery of jewellery and other goods worth Rs 3 million from a pawn shop at Sirimapura, Rajangane on April 26 have been arrested by the Tambuttegama Police along with the loot.

Police who went into action soon after a complaint was made by the shop owner on April 27 arrested two suspects at Rajangane Tract One and Paluwewa. The third suspect, a driver of a lorry used in the robbery was arrested near the Kalaoya temple.

Over 90 treasure hunts in 4 months

Thefts of artifacts and pillaging of Sri Lanka’s historical and cultural sites have recorded a steep rise, prompting the Archaeology Department to take additional security measures to protect the country’s archaeological treasures, Archaeology Department Director General Dr Senarath Dissanayake said. He told the Daily News 93 artifact thefts and treasure hunts were reported during the first four months of this year .

The National Heritage Ministry in coordination with the Archaeology Department has planned a series of programmes with special emphasis on the protection of archaeological monuments and artifacts in the wake of recent treasure hunts and artifacts robberies which are on the rise in the country, Dr Dissanayake said.
