Ratnam released by Court

Film Producer and Director Chandran Ratnam was released without any charges against him by the Gangodawila Magistrate today.

Ratnam was arrested by the police last week for allegedly possessing explosive materials in his former residence in Nugegoda.

STF to function under Defence Ministry

The Special Task Force (STF) — the police elite- force – which was under the direct purview of the Inspector General of Police, has been taken over by the Defence Ministry, informed sources said.

Cabinet, which met on Wednesday, had approved a Cabinet paper on this subject put forward by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

According to the Cabinet paper, the STF will be under the direct purview of the Defence Minister with effect from May 12. Continue Reading

Tiger promoters arrested

Two suspects, alleged to be LTTE cadres, were arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) and the police in Kalmunai and Kalawanchikudi for engaging in anti-state activities and promoting the now defunct LTTE.

Police Media Spokesman SP Preshantha Jayakody said that two mobile phones containing a video clip of the LTTE were in the possession of the suspects at the time of the arrest.

Mobile porn ban likely

The Children’s Court in Colombo today ordered the Police Women and Child’s bureau to seek the assistance of mobile phone companies on how porn sites accessed via mobile phones can be restricted or blocked.

Sources at the Women and Child’s bureau told Daily Mirror online that the order was based on a complaint lodged by a parent that his child was able to access porn sites via the mobile phone including sites banned by the government on the internet in Sri Lanka. Continue Reading

Death for wife’s murder

The Puttalam High Court sentenced a man to death by hanging this evening for the murder of his wife. In the absence of the death sentence the man will serve life in jail.

Sisters in crime arrested

Two school girls, both sisters, were arrested by the Piliyandala police for pick-pocketing from passengers on board public buses. The police recovered over 30 wallets from the two girls.

The two sisters, students of grade nine and twelve of a school in the area, pick-pocketed on board crowded buses. The suspects while traveling in buses used to target standing passengers by offering to hold onto their belongings and subsequently lifted their wallets.

Proclamation on Dhanuna

The Colombo Fort Magistrate has ordered the CID to publish a written proclamation on Dhanuna Tillekaratne, the son-in-law of General Sarath Fonseka, which will be put up in the Court premises, certain public places and near his residence and if he fails to abide by the proclamation his properties will be liable to be confiscated.

State Counsel, appearing on behalf of the AG’s department also said that according to provisions, if Dhanuna does not appear in court within the next 30 days, any civil person will be able to arrest him. Continue Reading
