Yesterday marked the 27th remembrance of the brutal massacre of 146 Buddhist pilgrims by LTTE terrorists at the Sacred Jaya Sri Maha-Bodhi at Anuradhapura. On May 14 , 1985 – a Sunday, the entire nation and the Buddhist world were shocked at the news of barbarism displayed by the most ruthless terrorist group – the LTTE, on unarmed innocent civilians including the clergy, women and children.

Attention must be focused on strengthening Sri Lanka’s maritime security since it plays a vital role in the country’s safety and protection, Pondicherry University Associate Professor A Subramanyam Raju said. “Strengthening maritime security is a must since new threats are emerging from the sea. Such threats are more difficult to tackle than those emanating from land,” he said. Professor Raju said the ocean is rich with many resources.
He was in Sri Lanka on a visit organized by the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies, Colombo.

The military in Mullaithivu is accomplishing the daunting task of winning the hearts and minds of the Tamils, who were brainwashed and misled by the LTTE for over three decades, by genuinely helping them to rise over the deadly memories of a blood soaked past, the Security Forces Commander Mullaithivu Maj. Gen. Leonard Brindly Ravindran Mark said.
“Most of the people in Mullaithivu are blood relations of LTTE leaders including V. Prabakaran. They were there until the last days of the end-battle and the majority of them have never seen outside Mullaithivu. It was a challenge to the military to change the minds of these people. But we are happy today as they are having a good relationship with soldiers”, he said.

All Sri Lankans, irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political belongings, will celebrate the third anniversary of the Security Forces liberating the country from the clutches of LTTE terrorism. It was on May 18, 2009 that Sri Lanka’s Security Forces accomplished that landmark achievement and became the only country in the world to crush terrorism, that too against the world’s most ruthless terrorist outfit.
Exactly three years ago, President Mahinda Rajapaksa declared with justifiable pride that the country had been liberated from the scourge of terrorism and hoisted the national flag at the Victory Day celebrations at the Galle Face Green. The true sons of our soil have achieved infinitely more than the so-called superpowers – crushing terrorism, and that too against the most brutal terrorist organisation in the world. The whole world was spellbound by that magnificent victory.
