New scheme for dual citizenship

The government has decided to amend the Citizenship Act No 18 of 1948 and the Immigration and Emigration Act No 20 of 1948 to formalise the grant of dual citizenship by establishing the ‘Overseas Sri Lankans’ Scheme.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s proposal and approved by the Cabinet will facilitate pre- examination to ensure that a person applying for dual citizenship in Sri Lanka has fulfilled the eligibility criteria for dual citizenship.

JVP’s stance on PSC queried

The government yesterday reiterated that the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) is the only forum where a lasting settlement to the ethnic issue can be found through discussion among various political parties and the JVP should express its stance on the PSC soon.

According to Acting Media Minister and Deputy Economic Development Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, the JVP has failed to announce whether they are participating in the PSC so far though various reports appeared in the media that the party would not be present in the Committee.

‘Home-grown solutions’ – key to peace – GL

External Affairs Minister Prof G L Peiris opened a four-day, official visit to Washington, DC on Tuesday with a series of meetings with key US Senate leaders and a talk on Sri Lanka’s post-conflict redevelopment and reconciliation programmes.

He emphasised that lasting peace, stability and growth in Sri Lanka will be achieved through home-grown solutions, not those prescribed by the international community.

Opposition scared of elections – President

President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited Anuradhapura, Saturday, to encourage SLFP stalwarts and activists engaged in party re- organisation activities. President Rajapaksa without confining himself to the Anuradhapura President’s House joined the reorganizing campaigners by visiting the villagers of Padaviya Ratmalgahawewa, Mihintale etc.

President Rajapaksa told the gathering that some sections were stating that the party re- organisation drive was being carried out since the government was preparing for a general election.

More Korean jobs for Lankan youths

South Korea has provided employment opportunities to over 2,000 Sri Lankan job seekers who have passed the selection tests in 2010 and 2011, Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau (SLBFE) sources said yesterday.

According to SLBFE chairman Amal Senadhilankara,1,527 Sri Lankans migrated to South Korea during the last four months, whereas the number of Sri Lankans migrating to South Korea during the corresponding period last year was only 1,370.
