France arrives ahead of World Cup

GEORGE, South Africa (AP) – France has arrived in South Africa for the World Cup, already facing criticism after a poor result in a warm-up friendly.

Ban on Pakistan’s Younis Khan lifted

ISLAMABAD (AP) – The indefinite ban on former Pakistan captain Younis Khan was lifted on Saturday, and a fine on current captain Shahid Afridi was revoked.

"I have set aside the ban on Younis," Pakistan Cricket Board arbitrator Irfan Qadir told reporters in the eastern city of Lahore after the hearing.

Trinity take on Isipathana in 33rd annual encounter

A spirited Isipathana College will have the edge over a rather unpredictable Trinity College in their 33rd annual encounter when the two teams meet in the President’s School Rugby League at Havelock Park, today.

In the last 32 games played between these two schools it is the Pathans who led the tally with 16 wins against 11 by Trinity while three matches played in 1992, 1993 and 1995 have ended in ties and the game in 2000 was not played since Trinity who completely skipped the league had to start from the lower division and thus the two teams could not meet that year.

England reach 92-3 at lunch

MANCHESTER, England (AP) – Bangladesh reduced England to 92-3 at lunch on Friday's day one of the second Test at Old Trafford.

Proteas seal ODI series

Controversies erupt in Inter-school tennis

In a bizarre sequence of events unfamiliar with inter-school sporting competitions most of the time, the S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia tennis coach has been allegedly assaulted by a parent of a player in another school during a Boys’ Under-13 All-island Inter-school Tennis Tournament match played at the SL Tennis Association (SLTA) on Wednesday (June 2).

Sylvester Francis, a prominent Colombo-based tennis coach, has allegedly been assaulted by a parent in the midst of an argument among spectators in a U-13 semi-final encounter held at the SLTA last Wednesday.

U-17 Colombo South Zonal Girls’ BasketballSt. Lawrence’s beat AIS in the curtain raiser

St. Lawrence’s College, Wellawatte beat Asian International School (AIS) 60-23 in a one sided affair in the opening match of the Under-17 Colombo South Zonal Girls’ Basketball Tournament that commenced at the Holy Family Convent, Dehiwala yesterday. St. Lawrence’s were leading 34-13 at half time.

Meanwhile, in the second match host HFC, Dehiwala posted a 59-35 victory over Our Lady of Victories, Moratuwa. The winners led 32-19 at half-time.

SLC security budget exceeds 23 million for ten days

Following the government’s admission that Sri Lanka Cricket is the third most corrupt institution in the country, more news about corrupt deals are emerging. ‘The Island’ learns SLC’s controversial security measures, that have earned the wrath of public, media and even police is going to exceed 23 million rupees.

SLC was severely criticized for allocating massive funds for security during several home series last year, but the lavish expenditure doesn’t seem to be ending.

Mubarak dazzles as CR edge out CH 23-17

Ceylonese Rugby & Football Club (CR&FC) scored a hard fought 23 points to 17 win against a fighting Colombo Hockey & Football Club (CH&FC) in a Caltex Division 1 Inter-club League Rugby Tournament fixture at Longden Place last evening.

Both teams had their moments in the game and produced two tries apiece in this game where place kicking decided the victor. The match winner for CR in this respect was Reza Muabarak whose contribution was an amazing 13 points, which came off through three penalties and two conversions. CH’s chances were kept alive through the boot of Dinuk de S. Wijeratne who slotted in two conversions and a penalty.

Dulakshi qualifies for Junior Asian Athletics Championship

Sri Lanka Air Force Athlete Eranga Dulakshi earned qualifying standards to represent Sri Lanka at the Junior Asian Athletics Championships as she finished the Under-20 Girls’ 3000 metres Steeplechase with a new record at the Junior National Athletics Championship which commenced at Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium at Diyagama, Homagama yesterday.

Former Debarawewa National School athlete who came under Sri Lanka Air Force banner after leaving school was the sole runner of her event but despite zero competition Dulakshi managed to lower the Junior National Athletics Championship record clocking 11:18.7 seconds. Her performance beat the qualifying mark set by the Athletics Association of Sri Lanka. The qualifying standard for the Junior Asian Championship was set at 11:30 seconds.
