JOHANNESBURG (AP) – Not many people expected Grafite to be at the World Cup – not even the Brazil striker himself.
He had no idea it would happen when he played in an amateur league in exchange for diapers and food for his newborn baby girl. He had no idea it would happen when he hopped from door to door on the streets of a small Brazilian city selling trash bags as a 21-year-old.

Assured of a slot in the final after knocking India out, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe square off in the last preliminary match of the ODI tri-series in Harare today hoping to get a measure of each other before the summit clash.
The result of the match is only of academic interest though a win for any of the side would come as a psychological boost ahead of the final.

A gallant set of forwards enabled Wesley College to stave off their chances of relegation to the next level as they pulled off a striking win over Dharmaraja College by 23 points to 7 in a decisive inter-school rugby encounter of the President’s Schools Rugby League at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy yesterday.
This victory for the Wesleyites came at a time when they were faced with the threat of relegation and with the current standing of the teams in Division 1 Group ‘A’ the Wesleyites thus make a narrow escape from relegation to remain in the top division. But this would be possible only if the Rajans are unable to make a brave come back in their next two encounters against St. Anthony’s and Isipathana and prove their critics wrong.

Navy Sports Club played cohesive rugby to down a disorganized Kandy SC outfit by 14 points to 13 in a thrilling Caltex Division 1 Inter-Club League Rugby Tournament match at Welisara yesterday.
Kandy SC were found wanting of playing a committed game throughout and had to sweat for points in the 80 minutes of rugby that was witnessed. They also failed to control their scrum. Their hallmark of playing fast open rugby looked a thing in the past as Navy worried the life out of them with some brilliant tackling and counter attacking. Kandy had the larger share of possession, but were off-colour in most departments of the game.
Navy’s fly half Dev Ananda looked the danger man with his kicking boots and made a handsome contribution of nine points which came off a penalty and two timely drop kicks. The winners got their points through a try, a penalty and two drop goals while Kandy SC responded with two tries and a penalty.

The glitz and the glamour was palpable as it embraced the light-hearted cricket that IIFA brought to us in a wholesome package of love and compassion. They were spreading a CAUSE that had much to do with alleviating poverty and distress. But the banter was rich in humour and when the moderator had asked in Sanga’s team dressing room what would be their target he was told quite nonchalantly, "500 in 10 overs" The spirited commentators matched the aura with subtle discourse. They even took us on a journey of "serious fun" as Chandrishan aptly termed it. He was crafty at times as when he couldn’t put a name on a face, he ingeniously said to his partner, "Let’s enjoy the visuals."
Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and in his characteristic manner of love-thy-neighbour gesture thought aloud how nice it would have been if the coin had heads on both sides for his rival to call correct. The rival captain, Suniel Shetty when told about the target set by Sanga’s team countered matter-of-factly that his team would target 501. The old timers were back to entertain us. Kalu who with Sanath had changed the concept of ODI cricket in the first ten overs was behind the sticks and when he did give the gloves to Avishka, snared a wicket in his very first delivery as a bowler. Suniel Shetty said he would love to do a film with the entire cast composed of Sanga’s team but that the script had to be written by Sanga himself. He had been to Sri Lanka ten years ago for a Singer Tournament and said that the warmth of love and joy he had experienced would never be matched by his mother-in-law.
