Indian stars at IIFA charity cricket match

Around 30 to 40 Indian actors will take part in the fund raising ‘Charity for Children’ cricket match that will be a part of the Videocon IIFA Weekend, 2011 Cricket World Cup Tournament Director and IIFA cricket match Chairman Suraj Dandeniya said.

IIFA an opportunity to showcase Lanka

Economic Development Deputy Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said hosting the 11th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards is not only a prestige to the country but it is an event which can have a positive effect in Sri Lanka’s development scheme as well.

IIFA : State-of -art stage

Events Coordinator and IIFA Logistics Manager Amesh Panawala said 75 percent of the work is complete on the stage settings where the Videocon Indian Film Academy Awards will take place at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium on June 5.

IIFA awards: Online voting on

The online voting for the IIFA Awards 2010 open to audiences of Indian cinema across the world will end on June 1.

The results of the online voting would determine the winners of the popular category, which would be announced on stage at the Micromax IIFA Awards ceremony to be held in Colombo from June 3 to 5.

The films nominated for the title of Best Picture are: 3 Idiots, Wanted, Kaminey, Paa and Dev D, while the Best Direction category nominations comprise, Rajkumar Hirani (3 Idiots), Anurag Kashyap (Dev D), Ayan Mukherji (Wake Up Sid), Vishal Bharadwaj (Kaminey), Imtiaz Ali (Love Aaj Kal) and R. Acting Media Minister tells Media: Uphold social responsibility

Acting Media Minister Dr. Mervyn Silva soon after assuming duties officially yesterday, called on the Country’s Media to uphold social responsibility.

He said that the media should act in a responsible manner, be impartial and accountable, as it was an important player in shaping public opinion.

While calling for higher media ethics, the Minister said the power vested in the Media should always go hand in hand with responsibility towards the people and freedom of expression should never forsake the unwritten law of responsibility.

The Minister said the media can adopt a more responsible approach in reporting news, ensuring that the news are not underreported to lull the readers to ignorance or to sensationalise it to such a degree that the public are not given enough space to think and make their intelligent judgement. SLBC to open Yarl FM

The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation plans to open a fully fledged radio station in Jaffna with islandwide coverage in about two weeks.

This station is named Yarl FM, symbolizing the cultural identity of the people of the Northern Province, states a SLBC press release.

The new radio service will open up new vistas of cultural re-awakening, harmonizing with the “Vision for the Future” – the second stage of Mahinda Chintana which pledges for the protection and sustainability of our art and culture.

Artistes intellectuals and other resource persons in the North will be able to participate in programs which are specifically designed to cater to the communities, thus criminating the hassle of travelling all the way to Colombo. Continue Reading

Commences new service: SLBC beams to Lankans in Korea

The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation ceremonially launched a new program to broadcast its services to Korea last Sunday.

The event was held at the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation premises under the patronage of South Korean Ambassador Choi Ki Chul.

“We will broadcast our programs to Korea for Sri Lankan expatriates/ Sinhala listeners,” said Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation Chairman Hudson Samarasinghe.

This is basically a magazine program which features Sri Lankan songs, Sri Lankan news and currency rates. This program aims at providing entertainment and information to the 75,000 Sri Lankan migrant workers. Continue Reading

President to open Ranmihitenne Tuesday

A celebration of Indian cinema, the IIFA Awards is a huge landmark in the Bollywood calendar. Since its inception in 2000 it has been held in a variety of international destinations. Previous hosts include the likes of the United Kingdom, Malaysia, South Africa, Singapore and Thailand.
